Days are getting longer & the sun shines brighter each day. The cold winds are balanced with a warm fireplace. I like avoiding the commercial Valentine’s day & choose instead to think of those I love, remember to take time for self care as well & reflect/act on empathy, love & compassion. It’s a time for crafting, cooking, thinking of the colors that spring will bring, drooling over seed catalogues, feasting on fancy raw cacao treats, making anything rose I can think of & planning for the months to come (a kindling of the flame.) It’s a time for crafting in groups, maybe some Valentines or felting. And of course, don’t forget the doilies!

Ylang Ylang Rose Cream
Sweet Orange Honey Lip Balm
~ simply fancy Herbal Massage oil ~
Ingredients: 1 cup oil (olive, sunflowerseed or fancier with almond)
1/3 cup dried roses
1 glass pint jar
Place rose petals in jar. Add oil until 1/2 – 1 inch from the top.
Put the lid on, label & date. And put in a sunny windowsill of the house. Gently shake everyday for 2 – 3 weeks (in this case) & strain for use. It can be used for massage or moisturizer. (& can be a great gift.)
In the summer I like to infuse oils with fresh herbs out in the brilliant sunshine, but winter has a subtle sunshine for making herbal oils. I also find it’s a way to connect with the plants even while they are sleeping under snow, by shaking the infusing herbs each day & being part of this medicine making process.
Roses, of course, are a nice flower to bring out in February. A reminder of those vibrant days to come late spring.
Rose Oatmal Herbal Bath
2 handfuls rose petals
2 handfuls oatmeal
Place roses & oatmeal in a quart jar. Filled with boiling water & cover. Steep for 15 minutes. Strain into bath. & Soak!
This bath will help soothe & restore. Roses are calming to the nervous system, a herb of the heart. Oatmeal is soothing & protecting to the skin. Add a little coconut oil (1 Tbs) for more moisturizing if you like (but be careful not to slip!)

Lavender Coffee Foot Scrub
In the winter our feet tend to be cooped up under layers and boots, which is nice to keep warm, but let’s give them some love!
Ingredients: 2 – 4 Tbs ground coffee, 1 Tbs raw sugar, 1 Tbs olive oil & a few drops of Lavender essential oil
For a softer scrub use the coffee grounds from the morning. Combine all ingredients, leaving for 10 minutes to soak together. Over the bathtub or a basin, gently scrub feet in circular motion. Make sure when washing that you don’t slip afterwards, since the oil will still be on your feet until washed!
Lavender Sea Salt Foot Soak
Take a self care evening and do a foot bath.
Ingredients: Sea salt & lavender flowers.
Directions: Boil 4 cups water, add 1/4 cup lavender flowers & 1/4 cup sea salt. Cover & step for 10 minutes. Pour the brew into a container that fits both feet & add some more hot water. Grab a book & soak soak soak.
